On Friday, November 27 2015, 57 year old Robert Lewis Dear walked into a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic and started shooting. After killing three people, injuring nine, and a five hour stand-off, he surrendered to local authorities. One of those killed was a police officer, two were civilians visiting the clinic. After his arrest, Dear allegedly rambled to authorities about “no more baby parts.” He was also overheard shouting in court “I am guilty, there will be no trial. Robert Lewis Dear was born in Kentucky, but grew up in the Carolinas and is known to be a survivalist. He vandalized an abortion clinic twenty years ago by gluing the locks on the doors. His record includes a restraining order and domestic violence allegation.

 

This outburst came months after doctored videos surfaced on the internet, accusing Planned Parenthood of profiting off the harvesting of fetal tissue samples for scientific research. Presidential candidate Carly Fiorina even cited the videos during a Republican debate, urging for the federal defunding of Planned Parenthood. The creator of the video would later admit the images from his video were not from Planned Parenthood. Regardless, the House and Senate have approved an amendment to defund Planned Parenthood, although President Obama has assured he will veto it.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Only 3% of Planned Parenthood’s services are abortions. The other 97% of services include preventing unintended pregnancies with birth control; Pap tests; breast exams; tests and treatments for STDs and HIV tests; and educational programs, all for women who can’t afford or don't have regular healthcare.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This leaves America with a senate who wants to defund a vital healthcare service for millions of needy women, but refuses to pass legislation requiring background checks on gun purchases. A recent USA today poll found the majority of Americans don’t even want to defund Planned Parenthood. The defunding of Planned Parenthood would  be detrimental to millions of women’s health, while exposing the sad state of government thought process.
